San Martín de los Andes is a mountain town on the shore of Lake Lácar, in the south of the province of Neuquén, surrounded by the Lanín National Park and dominated on the horizon by the volcano of the same name. Its orderly layout, Patagonian-style architecture and the proximity of lakes and forests make it a comfortable, well-served base.
In a programme it is the final destination of the Seven Lakes Route coming from Villa La Angostura and Bariloche, and the base for visiting the lakes of the Lanín National Park, as well as a ski centre on Cerro Chapelco.
Summer (December–March) is the season for boat trips, hiking and lake activities; winter brings skiing at Chapelco and the snow offer. Spring and autumn are quiet and of great scenic beauty, with changeable weather, cool nights and the possibility of some reduced services in the low season.
San Martín de los Andes is suited to company meetings and incentive groups of small to medium size, with an orderly town and full services, but it is not a venue for large congresses. Its advantage is combining work and nature in a compact setting. The capacity of meeting rooms and accommodation should be checked for each date.
Credible experiences include a boat trip on Lake Lácar to Quila Quina, excursions to lakes in the Lanín National Park, horse-riding or fly-fishing days, dinners of Patagonian cuisine and, in winter, skiing at Chapelco. There is also the possibility of an approach to Mapuche culture in communities of the region, always with local guides.
It is reached via the airport of the Chapelco area (CPC), whose air operation depends on the season and should be checked, or by road from Bariloche and Villa La Angostura along the Seven Lakes Route, of great scenic value. In winter there may be snow restrictions on the mountain roads.
Plan 2 to 3 nights, preferably within a lakes circuit that combines Bariloche, Villa La Angostura and the Seven Lakes Route. Works well for nature travellers, families and skiers from regional and long-haul markets who want a Patagonian destination quieter than Bariloche.
