A three-day escape into the Peruvian Amazon from Puerto Maldonado, known as the 'Capital of Biodiversity'.
The programme unfolds in the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most diverse areas on the planet, with jungle-lodge accommodation and full board. After a boat journey along the Lower Madre de Dios, the days pass among trail walks through primary and secondary forest, the canoe crossing of the crystal-clear Lake Sandoval, the climb up the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway —a system of hanging bridges over the treetops— and boat rides at dusk and by night in search of caimans, dolphins, monkeys and birds. The trip ends with a visit to the Butterfly House before the return to the airport.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado
Arrival in Puerto Maldonado, the 'Capital of Biodiversity'. We recommend booking flights arriving before 12:00 to coordinate the boat transfers to the lodge. A 25-minute boat journey along the Lower Madre de Dios reaches the lodge, hidden within the Tambopata National Reserve on a former cacao and rubber plantation of primary and secondary forest. After settling into the cabin or room, buffet lunch at the Casa Grande and a trail walk from the Eco Centre for an introduction to the Amazon basin's ecosystems. At dusk, the 'Río de Noche' boat ride with the explorer guide to spot caimans along the banks and the stars of the southern hemisphere. À-la-carte dinner inspired by native Amazonian ingredients. Overnight at the lodge. Meals: lunch and dinner.
Day 2: Tambopata National Reserve
In the morning, a visit to Lake Sandoval, a crystal-clear stretch of water within the Tambopata National Reserve. After a walk along a wooden boardwalk, a carved-canoe crossing through the mangroves and across the lake, fringed by palms and home to thousands of birds, the endangered giant river otter, howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, turtles and black caimans. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, about 20 minutes by boat along the Madre de Dios river to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a system of hanging bridges linked by eight platforms and two observation towers, the first tower 38 metres above the ground, ideal for spotting toucans, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. At nightfall, a walk through the forest on foot. À-la-carte dinner from 19:30. Overnight at the lodge. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 3: Transfer to the airport
A final morning at the lodge amid the sounds of the jungle. Breakfast at the Casa Grande and check-out at 10:00. We recommend avoiding flights departing before 12:00 to coordinate the transfer from the lodge to the airport. A 25-minute wooden-boat journey along the winding Madre de Dios river, with a short visit to the Butterfly House —Peru has 3,700 known butterfly species— before reaching the airport. Meals: breakfast.
