Circuits, hotels, excursions and transfers in Puerto Maldonado.
CircuitsHotelsExcursions
Puerto Maldonado, in Peru's southeastern Amazon, is the access gateway to the Tambopata rainforest and its biodiversity reserves. It connects by air from Cusco or Lima and leads on to jungle lodges set along the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers.
As an Amazon extension to the Andean circuit, it brings a marked natural contrast after the Cusco and Machu Picchu block.
The Amazon climate is warm and humid year-round. The drier season (May–October) makes hikes and wildlife viewing easier, though occasional cold fronts known as friajes can arrive. The rainy season (November–March) raises the rivers and the exuberance of the forest.
MICE & groups
Given the limited capacity of the lodges, the Amazon is reserved for small incentive groups rather than large conventions. A lodge can be taken over for a small group, offering an exclusive nature experience as a reward.
Incentives
Chartering a jungle lodge for exclusive use, night wildlife excursions, canopy towers and visits to macaw clay licks and oxbow lakes make distinctive rewards. Nature immersion contrasts sharply with the Andean cultural component.
Access & logistics
Reached by air at Puerto Maldonado airport (PEM), with short flights from Cusco (CUZ) and connections from Lima (LIM). From the town, a boat transfer along the Madre de Dios or Tambopata rivers leads to the lodges, with times varying by the accommodation's location.
Trade notes
Budget at least two nights at a lodge to justify the transfer and river logistics. Puerto Maldonado fits naturally as an Amazon extension after Cusco and Machu Picchu, appealing to markets interested in nature and biodiversity.
