Circuits Hotels Excursions

Castro is the capital of the Isla Grande de Chiloé, in southern Chile, and is recognised for its colourful palafitos over the fjord and for the wooden church of San Francisco. Several wooden churches of Chiloé appear on the UNESCO World Heritage list, part of an island culture marked by mythology, gastronomy and life by the sea.

In a programme it works as a base for touring Chiloé, following Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt, at a quiet pace and in contact with local life.

Destination guide for the trade

When to go

Chiloé has a mild, humid and windy maritime climate, with frequent rain in any season. From December to March, in the height of the austral summer, there are more hours of daylight and better conditions for sailing and visiting the villages; winter is cold and rainy, and reduces services and opening hours. Waterproof clothing should always be taken.

MICE & groups

Castro is suitable for small groups with cultural interests, not for large congresses: the island's accommodation and meeting room offer is small in scale and much of its interest lies in the heritage and the territory. It is recommended as a stage of a broader programme through southern Chile, with short meetings and careful logistics.

Incentives

Credible incentive experiences include a traditional curanto cooked in an earth pit, a visit to the wooden churches of Dalcahue, Achao and Castro, a trip through the channels with a view of the palafitos and excursions to Chiloé National Park to see its forest and its coast. They are experiences of island culture and nature for small groups.

Access & logistics

It is reached by road from Puerto Montt to the Chacao channel, which is crossed by ferry, and then along Route 5 to Castro, on a total journey of about three to four hours. There is also an airfield on the island, whose air operation should be checked by season. Transfers within the island are by road and ferry times may vary with the weather.

Trade notes

Plan 2 or 3 nights, with time to visit churches and villages. It is linked with Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt and Ancud on a route through the lakes and sea of southern Chile. Suits clients with interests in culture, nature and gastronomy, above all European travellers and those from Latin American markets seeking quiet experiences away from the busiest circuits.

Booking & policies

Are the prices shown net or retail?

Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the B2B Portal.

What happens after I book?

When you book, we receive your booking and start working on it: it shows as “In process” and we let you know of every update. Vouchers are sent once payments have been received.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those stated in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a service has its own policy.

Can dates or passenger names be changed after booking?

Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
