Tango Festival and World Cup in Buenos Aires
Two weeks of tango with free admission, in the cheapest month of the year in the city.
What it is
The festival spreads concerts, classes and milongas across venues throughout the city, and the World Championship brings couples from dozens of countries to compete in tango de pista and tango escenario, with the finals at the Teatro Gran Rex. The programme runs through venues such as the Teatro Colón, the San Martín, the Usina del Arte and the Centro Cultural Recoleta, and admission is free.
What to offer
Four to five nights in August, when the city is at its lowest price level of the year and the festival adds content at no admission cost. It chains well with Bariloche, which in that month is in full ski season.
How it operates
Admission is free, but not everything is first-come: some activities are reserved in advance through the festival's official channels. The programme is published shortly beforehand, so the itinerary is built around the expected venues and days and adjusted when the calendar appears.
When to book
Three to five months ahead. That is comfortable next to Carnival or Patagonia, but a well-placed hotel in the venue corridor commits before the rest.
