Morro de São Paulo travel guide
Morro de São Paulo is a car-free village on Tinharé Island, off the southern coast of Bahia. Its beaches, known simply by numbers — First, Second, Third and Fourth — range from lively stretches to quiet corners with natural pools. It is reached by boat or catamaran from Salvador or Valença. It is a relaxed, informal beach escape that complements a cultural stay in Salvador very well.

Neighbourhoods in Morro de São Paulo
- The Vila (village centre) The historic core, spanning the squares Praça Aureliano Lima and Praça da Amendoeira, with Caminho da Praia as the main pedestrian commercial street, lined with shops and restaurants.
- Zimbo The island's largest and most densely populated neighbourhood, developed during the 1990s tourism expansion, with fuller year-round infrastructure than the beach strips.
- Mangaba A residential hillside neighbourhood reached via a 188-step staircase from Fonte Grande street, preserving native vegetation and fruit trees, home mostly to long-term residents rather than visitor accommodation.
Beaches in Morro de São Paulo
- Ilha do Caitá (off Terceira Praia) A small island just off Third Beach, ringed by coral reef and marked by a single coconut tree; one of the area's preferred spots for snorkelling and diving among colourful reef fish.
- Quarta Praia's natural pools A coral barrier along Fourth Beach creates natural swimming pools, most pronounced at low tide, making the beach a snorkelling spot as much as a stretch of sand.
- Quinta Praia / Praia do Encanto The fifth and farthest beach, roughly 8km from the village, edged by mangroves and Atlantic Forest with coral-formed natural pools; considered the best-preserved of the numbered beaches.
- Praia Linda (Gamboa) A beach within the separate fishing village of Gamboa, connected to the Gamboa waterfront by a walkway, distinct from the clay-bath stretch of Gamboa beach itself.

What to do in Morro de São Paulo without booking an excursion
- Fonte Grande & Igreja Nossa Senhora da Luz A self-guided walk past Fonte Grande, a fountain built in 1746 that was the largest colonial-era water system in Bahia, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, holding 17th-18th century sacred images.
- Street-food stalls Acarajé (a deep-fried black-eyed-pea fritter stuffed with vatapá and dried shrimp) is sold from street stands in the village centre, no reservation needed.
- Walking trail to Gamboa Gamboa can be reached on foot via a moderate trail from the village centre, as an alternative to the boat trip, passing several smaller beaches en route.

The driest, sunniest months run from September to March; April to June brings heavier rain. Heat is constant year-round.

What to offer and why
Three to four nights as the beach leg after Salvador. The island is covered on foot and by boat, so the programme is built around the tide rather than a bus timetable.

Practical and operational
Access is by boat or air taxi from Salvador and there are no cars on the island: luggage is carried by hand or barrow, and that single fact decides whether the destination suits the client.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those stated in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a service has its own policy.
Can dates or passenger names be changed after booking?
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
