Puerto Maldonado travel guide
Puerto Maldonado, at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers, is the gateway to one of Peru's most biodiverse rainforests. From here you reach the lodges of the Tambopata National Reserve by boat, to watch macaws, monkeys and caimans. It is the most accessible Amazon option from Cusco or Lima.

What to do in Puerto Maldonado
- Lake Sandoval approx. 9 h A full day with a canoe; giant otters and macaws if the day cooperates.
- Tres Chimbadas and the macaw clay lick approx. 9 h A pre-dawn departure: the clay lick comes alive with the first light.
- A night walk approx. 2 h Two hours with a torch; it is when the forest shows what it hides by day.
- A canopy walkway approx. 3 h Suspension bridges at canopy height; the birds are at eye level at first light.
- A sunset cruise on the Madre de Dios approx. 2 h The wide river at the end of the day, from the lodge's own boat.
- Monkey Island approx. 3 h A river island of rescued monkeys; short, and it works with children.

When to go
The dry season, May to October, is the most recommended: less rain, firmer trails and wildlife concentrated along rivers and clay licks. The rainy season, November to April, is more humid and hot, with the forest at its greenest.
How many days
At least three days and two nights at a lodge are recommended to reach into the reserve. An extra night reaches the more distant clay licks and lakes, with better sighting chances.
What not to miss
Lake Sandoval, with its giant river otters; the clay licks where macaws gather at dawn; night walks in search of caimans; and canopy and river excursions. Tambopata's biodiversity includes hundreds of bird and butterfly species.
What to offer and why
Three nights in a lodge: with two, the client spends one day arriving and another leaving, and is left with a single real jungle day. It chains naturally after Cusco, with a short flight and a drop in altitude that does the body good.
When to book
Four to six months for the dry season. The lodges are small and the river-view rooms commit first.
Practical and operational
The lodge is reached by river and the transfer is part of the programme, not an errand. Luggage is limited to essentials and the rest is stored in town; say so before the client packs.

Are the prices shown net or retail?
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the agency portal.
How is a booking confirmed?
Most bookings are confirmed immediately and the voucher is emailed within minutes. When a service shows “In process”, RUMBO LIBRE is confirming final availability with the receptive operator at destination — usually within 24 to 48 business hours.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those confirmed in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a supplier applies its own policy.
Can dates or passenger names be changed after confirmation?
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed with the receptive operator subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
