The Chilean product that works exactly when the south closes, and the only one that carries a programme in midwinter.
The Atacama desert can be visited all year, but between April and October the nights clear consistently, which is what turns stargazing into a sellable product rather than a gamble. Around San Pedro the itinerary orders itself: the Tatio geysers before dawn, the salt flats and high-altitude lagoons, and the Valle de la Luna at sunset.
Four nights in San Pedro with the excursions ordered by altitude rather than by preference: the low-lying ones first, then Tatio and the lagoons, which sit above 4,000 metres. It chains with Santiago in spring and, between May and July, carries the Chilean leg on its own while Patagonia is out of season.
Nights are cold all year and at altitude: that is the first thing to warn the client about, along with acclimatisation. Observation programmes do not run around the full moon, because the light ruins the sky, so the exact departure date is confirmed at quotation with the Local Supplier.
Three to four months ahead. San Pedro's hotels are small in scale and the properties with their own observation programme commit first.
A good window for an incentive extending from Santiago: the desert gives a different reason to travel, with small groups and predictable logistics outside the summer.
