San Pedro de Atacama travel guide
San Pedro de Atacama is the base village for exploring the driest desert on the planet, in northern Chile at around 2,400 metres of altitude. From here you reach the Valle de la Luna, the El Tatio geysers, the Salar de Atacama and the altiplano lagoons. Altitude sets the pace of the trip and is best respected.

- Valle de la Luna at sunset approx. 4 h A low-altitude half-day: the right outing for the first day.
- The Tatio geysers at sunrise approx. 7 h A pre-dawn departure above 4,000 metres: not a first-day excursion.
- Altiplanic lagoons, the salt flat and Piedras Rojas approx. 9 h A full day at altitude; schedule it once the client has acclimatised.

- The Puritama hot springs approx. 3 h Warm terraced pools in a canyon; the recovery afternoon after altitude.
- Rainbow Valley and the Yerbas Buenas petroglyphs approx. 5 h Mineral colour and pre-Hispanic carvings; low altitude, and it is what operators run on full-moon nights.

When to go
The best months are March to May and September to November, with stable weather and fewer crowds. Summer is hotter and busier; winter has very cold nights, especially on the altiplano.
How many days
We recommend at least three days to acclimatise and cover the main circuits. It is best to start with lower-altitude sights, such as the Valle de la Luna and the salt flat, before ascending to El Tatio or the altiplano lagoons.
What not to miss
The Valle de la Luna at sunset; the El Tatio geysers at dawn, above 4,300 metres; the Salar de Atacama with its flamingos; and the altiplano lagoons, such as Miscanti and Miñiques.
What to offer and why
Four nights with the excursions ordered by altitude rather than by preference: the low-lying ones first, then Tatio and the lagoons, which sit above 4,000 metres. It chains with Santiago in spring and carries the Chilean leg alone between May and July.
When to book
Three to four months. San Pedro's hotels are small in scale and the properties with their own observation programme commit first.
Practical and operational
Nights are cold all year and at altitude: that is the first warning, along with acclimatisation. Observation programmes do not run around the full moon, so the exact date is confirmed at quotation with the Local Supplier.

Are the prices shown net or retail?
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the agency portal.
How is a booking confirmed?
Most bookings are confirmed immediately and the voucher is emailed within minutes. When a service shows “In process”, RUMBO LIBRE is confirming final availability with the receptive operator at destination — usually within 24 to 48 business hours.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those confirmed in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a supplier applies its own policy.
Can dates or passenger names be changed after confirmation?
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed with the receptive operator subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
