Paraty is a colonial port town on the Costa Verde, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro state, between the sea and the Atlantic Forest. Its historic centre of cobbled streets and whitewashed colonial houses has been part since 2019 of the UNESCO mixed site “Paraty and Ilha Grande: Culture and Biodiversity”. It is completed by a bay of islands and beaches explored by boat. About four hours from Rio de Janeiro by road, it works as a cultural and relaxation stage between Rio and São Paulo.
Paraty can be visited all year. From May to September the weather is drier and cooler, with good conditions for walking the centre and sailing. The southern summer (December to March) is warm, humid and rainy, and also the busiest period. At the highest tides some streets in the centre can flood, so suitable footwear is advisable.
Two nights allow time for the historic centre and a day on the bay; with three nights a relaxed boat day or an outing to the trails and waterfalls around the town can be added. It is a stage at an unhurried pace rather than a destination with many transfers.
The largely pedestrian historic centre and the bay, with its islands and beaches, explored by boat. Add the artisan cachaça distilleries, the restaurants set in colonial houses, the beaches of Trindade and the Atlantic Forest trails that surround the town.
Two to three nights as a cultural stage between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, or as the close of a Rio programme along the Costa Verde. A boat day on the bay adds nature without changing hotels, and suits couples, small groups and culture-minded clients.
Demand concentrates in the southern summer, New Year and festival dates, and the historic pousadas are small in scale. Always check availability in advance; for those dates, as far ahead as possible. It is wise to confirm lodging first and then the boat outings.
With no airport in regular use, access is by road: about four hours from Rio de Janeiro and somewhat longer from São Paulo. The historic centre is cobbled and almost pedestrian, so comfortable shoes and light luggage are advisable. Boat outings depend on sea conditions and rain.
We arrange the road transfer from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo with contracted local operators and establishments, as there is no commercial airport in regular use. In the pedestrian centre we coordinate stays in historic pousadas and boat outings from the harbour with local establishments and operators.
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see a reference “from” price, indicative and subject to availability; the net rate is never shown outside the B2B Portal.
When you book, we receive your booking and start working on it: it shows as “In process” and we let you know of every update. Vouchers are sent once payments have been received.
Cancellations are governed by the conditions stated in each quotation. The standard conditions are: more than 30 days before arrival, the deposit is non-refundable; 30 to 15 days before arrival, 50% of the total price is charged; less than 15 days before arrival or a no-show, 100%. They may vary on peak dates and depend on the policy of each hotel and service. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. Conditions stated in the quotation and accepted by the agency at booking take precedence over the general schedule in Clause 7.1 of the Terms.
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
