Quebrada de Humahuaca travel guide

The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a long Andean valley in the north of the province of Jujuy, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 as a cultural landscape. Its coloured mountains, adobe villages and traces of ancient indigenous routes give the journey a distinct identity, with classic stops at Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca. The valley runs for about 155 kilometres and the climb is gradual.

Who to offer it to

Nature and wildlifeColoured mountains, the Salinas Grandes and Hornocal: high-altitude landscapes.
AdventureHorse rides, llama caravans and high-altitude roads for the active traveller.

When to go

The most stable period is the dry season, from April to November, with sunny days and cold nights; the cool, dry winter is much appreciated. Rains arrive from December to March, mostly in the afternoon, and can affect roads and access. Given the altitude of several sections, weather and acclimatisation should be taken into account.

How many days

Two nights in the Quebrada allow an unhurried visit to Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca. Many programmes cover it in one long day from Salta or Jujuy, with less time in each village. The Salinas Grandes and the Hornocal range are added as extra excursions, also full days.

What not to miss

Purmamarca and its Hill of Seven Colours; Tilcara and the Pucará; the town of Humahuaca; the Hornocal range; and the Salinas Grandes via the Cuesta de Lipán, a road that rises above 4,000 metres. All of it is best enjoyed by climbing gradually along the valley.

What to offer and why

One or two nights in the valley, with one village per day: Purmamarca for its colours, Tilcara for the Pucará and Humahuaca for its centre. The Salinas Grandes and Hornocal are separate high-altitude excursions. It works well as the second stage of a circuit that starts in Salta.

When to book

Demand concentrates in the high season and accommodation in the valley is limited. Always check availability in advance and, in high season, as far ahead as possible. It is best to block the accommodation first and only then build the excursions for each day of the programme.

Practical and operational

Humahuaca lies at around 3,000 metres and Hornocal and the Cuesta de Lipán climb higher still: acclimatise and ascend gradually. Summer rains can affect access. Arrive via Jujuy airport or by road from Salta, about two hours, then along National Route 9.

How we arrange it

We coordinate transfers, visits and lodging in the Quebrada with local operators and establishments. We build the itinerary with a gradual ascent and full days between villages, and confirm well ahead in the high season, so the agency has no surprises.

Booking & policies

Are the prices shown net or retail?

Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see a reference “from” price, indicative and subject to availability; the net rate is never shown outside the B2B Portal.

What happens after I book?

When you book, we receive your booking and start working on it: it shows as “In process” and we let you know of every update. Vouchers are sent once payments have been received.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations are governed by the conditions stated in each quotation. The standard conditions are: more than 30 days before arrival, the deposit is non-refundable; 30 to 15 days before arrival, 50% of the total price is charged; less than 15 days before arrival or a no-show, 100%. They may vary on peak dates and depend on the policy of each hotel and service. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. Conditions stated in the quotation and accepted by the agency at booking take precedence over the general schedule in Clause 7.1 of the Terms.

Can dates or passenger names be changed after booking?

Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
