El Chaltén is a small mountain village in the north of Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, at the foot of Cerro Fitz Roy and within sight of Cerro Torre. National law recognises it as the National Capital of Trekking: the main trails start on foot from the village itself. It is a nature destination rather than one of urban services and, in a programme, works as a natural extension of El Calafate.
The visiting season runs roughly from October to April, with long days in the southern summer and trails in their best condition. The weather is very changeable and windy, and Fitz Roy can stay hidden behind clouds for several days. In winter many services close or scale back and access to the trails is limited.
Two to three nights as an extension of El Calafate. A full day allows the classic trail, to Laguna de los Tres at the foot of Fitz Roy; it is wise to add a shorter day, at Laguna Torre or the viewpoints, as a buffer in case the sky does not cooperate.
The trails to Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, with Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre as the backdrop; the Cóndores and Águila viewpoints, close to the village; and day excursions to the Viedma glacier area. The peaks show themselves when the sky allows, and that margin is part of the visit.
Two to three nights combined with El Calafate: a long trail day to the foot of Fitz Roy, a shorter day at Laguna Torre or the viewpoints, and a margin for the weather. With a single night, one cloudy day is enough for the client not to see the mountain.
The village's bed base is limited and demand concentrates in December, January and February. Always check availability in advance; for those dates, as far ahead as possible. October, November, March and April leave more room; in winter the offer shrinks and trekking should not be programmed.
There is no airport of its own: the village is reached by road from El Calafate in about three hours. The wind is frequent and strong, and the trail to Laguna de los Tres takes a full day and good fitness, which should be checked before quoting. The trails start on foot from the village.
We coordinate transfers from El Calafate, guided walks and excursions with licensed local operators and establishments. Accommodation is limited and fills up in season, so we confirm well in advance and leave a margin for the weather.
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see a reference “from” price, indicative and subject to availability; the net rate is never shown outside the B2B Portal.
When you book, we receive your booking and start working on it: it shows as “In process” and we let you know of every update. Vouchers are sent once payments have been received.
Cancellations are governed by the conditions stated in each quotation. The standard conditions are: more than 30 days before arrival, the deposit is non-refundable; 30 to 15 days before arrival, 50% of the total price is charged; less than 15 days before arrival or a no-show, 100%. They may vary on peak dates and depend on the policy of each hotel and service. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. Conditions stated in the quotation and accepted by the agency at booking take precedence over the general schedule in Clause 7.1 of the Terms.
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
