Puerto Natales travel guide
Puerto Natales, on the shore of the Ultima Esperanza Sound, is the natural base for visiting Torres del Paine National Park, one of Patagonia's great icons. Excursions into the park, glacier navigations and trekking routes all set off from here. It is an almost obligatory stop on any programme through Chile's far south.

What to do in Puerto Natales
- Torres del Paine in a full day approx. 10 h The way to see the park without walking: viewpoints, lakes and wildlife by vehicle.
- The Base Torres trek approx. 10 h A long, demanding day; only for a client who genuinely walks.
- The Grey glacier sailing approx. 5 h It depends on the wind and is cancelled by it; leave slack in the itinerary.
- The Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers approx. 9 h A full day up the sound; it sails on days when the park is unworkably windy.
- The Milodón cave approx. 2 h The giant sloth cave on the road into the park; a stop, not a day.
- An estancia day in the steppe approx. 8 h Sheep-farming Patagonia with lamb on the fire; the counterweight to the park.
- Kayak on the Serrano river approx. 5 h Flat water inside the park; being in the landscape without a trek.

When to go
The season runs from October to April; the southern summer, December to February, brings long days but heavy visitor numbers. The Patagonian wind is near constant and the weather can shift several times in a single day.
How many days
For a first visit, two or three days in the park allow one main trek plus a scenic day. Full circuits such as the W or the Circuit require five to eight days with refuge logistics.
What not to miss
The base viewpoint of the Towers; the Cuernos del Paine and Lake Pehoe; the Grey glacier and its navigation; and guanaco and birdlife sightings. The Milodon Cave, near Natales, rounds out the visit.
What to offer and why
Three nights minimum for the park to be more than a photograph: the full-day tour for a first visit, the Base Torres trek only for a client who walks, and the Grey sailing as a third day.
When to book
Eight to twelve months for December, January and February: the bed base inside and around the park is the hardest thing to secure in all of Chile.
Practical and operational
Wind governs the day: it cancels sailings and changes walks, and an itinerary without slack cannot absorb a cancellation. The overland crossing to El Calafate takes half a day and crosses a border.

Are the prices shown net or retail?
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the agency portal.
How is a booking confirmed?
Most bookings are confirmed immediately and the voucher is emailed within minutes. When a service shows “In process”, RUMBO LIBRE is confirming final availability with the receptive operator at destination — usually within 24 to 48 business hours.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those confirmed in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a supplier applies its own policy.
Can dates or passenger names be changed after confirmation?
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed with the receptive operator subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
