El Calafate travel guide
El Calafate exists because of the ice: it is the service base for Los Glaciares National Park and, above all, for the Perito Moreno glacier, one of the few ice fronts still advancing. Cruises across Lake Argentino and ice-trekking excursions set out from here. It is an almost obligatory stop when building a southern Patagonia programme.

What to do in El Calafate
- The Perito Moreno boardwalks approx. 9 h A full day; calvings keep no schedule, so allow time on the balconies.
- The nautical safari facing the glacier approx. 3 h An hour on the water that gives the ice front its real scale.
- Minitrekking on the ice approx. 9 h With crampons and a guide; there are age and fitness limits worth checking beforehand.
- The Upsala and Spegazzini navigation approx. 10 h A full day sailing to glaciers with no road access; ice and wind decide the route.
- An estancia day with Patagonian lamb approx. 8 h Sheep, horses and lamb on the fire; the steppe side of a destination sold as ice.

When to go
High season runs from October to April, with long days and mild temperatures in the austral summer. Winter (June to August) is cold with reduced services, though the glacier can be visited year-round.
How many days
Two to three days usually suffice: a full day at Perito Moreno with the boardwalks and, if desired, a cruise or ice mini-trek. Adding the excursion to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers calls for an extra day.
What not to miss
The Perito Moreno glacier and its boardwalks; the cruise through the channels of Lake Argentino to the Upsala and Spegazzini fronts; the mini-trek on the ice; and the Laguna Nimez bird reserve beside the town.
What to offer and why
Three nights: the boardwalks, one ice or boat product, and a day for El Chaltén if the client walks. Two nights buys the glacier and nothing else.
When to book
Eight to twelve months for December, January and February. Three to five months in April and October, the two best-value ends.
Practical and operational
Minitrekking and Big Ice have age and fitness limits; check them before quoting rather than after. The airport is twenty minutes from town, but the glacier is more than an hour away.
How we arrange it
We coordinate transfers, park entries and cruises with licensed local suppliers and sell net rates to the agency. Cruises and ice mini-treks have limited capacity, so we book ahead in season.

Are the prices shown net or retail?
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the agency portal.
How is a booking confirmed?
Most bookings are confirmed immediately and the voucher is emailed within minutes. When a service shows “In process”, RUMBO LIBRE is confirming final availability with the receptive operator at destination — usually within 24 to 48 business hours.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those confirmed in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a supplier applies its own policy.
Can dates or passenger names be changed after confirmation?
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed with the receptive operator subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
