Pucón travel guide

Pucón is a tourist town in La Araucanía, on the shore of Lake Villarrica and at the foot of the Villarrica volcano, an active volcano of 2,847 m inside the national park of the same name. It is the starting point for excursions to the Villarrica and Huerquehue national parks, to lakes Caburgua and Tinquilco and to several hot springs. In a programme it works as a stage of lakes and volcanoes in the south of Chile, with a flight to Temuco and a transfer by road.

Who to offer it to

AdventureVolcano ascent, rafting and trails for those who want activity; the ascent depends on the state of the volcano.
Nature and wildlifeTwo national parks, lakes and hot springs within excursion range of the town.
Incentive groupsNature retreats for small or medium groups, with lodging of moderate scale; not a destination for large congresses.

When to go

The climate is temperate oceanic, with cold, rainy winters and a drier, warmer summer. From December to February the lake, river and hiking activities are concentrated. In winter and spring skiing on the volcano, usually from mid-June to mid-October, and the hot springs are added. The ascent of the volcano depends on its state and the weather, so an alternative programme should be planned.

How many days

Two or three nights allow a day of volcano and parks to be combined with another of lake and hot springs, and a third left as a margin for bad weather. With a single night one excursion is barely reached; the farther departures, such as the Huilo Huilo reserve, call for a day with transfers by road.

What not to miss

The Villarrica volcano and its national park; Huerquehue National Park and Lake Tinquilco; Lake Caburgua and the Ojos del Caburgua; the hot springs of Huife, Palguín, Río Blanco, Menetúe and the Termas Geométricas; rafting down the Trancura river in summer; and the Cuevas Volcánicas.

What to offer and why

Two or three nights on a route through the southern lakes and volcanoes, combined with Puerto Varas and Santiago. A typical programme adds a volcano or park day, another of lake and hot springs, and a third as a margin for bad weather. The arrival is through Temuco airport, with a transfer by road.

When to book

Demand concentrates in the austral summer, December to February. Always check availability in advance; in that period, as far ahead as possible. Outside summer there is more room, but the hot springs and the guided departures should still be booked in advance.

Practical and operational

Arrival is through Temuco airport (ZCO), about 105 km from Pucón on route CH-199; Santiago is about 780 km away. The ascent of the Villarrica volcano depends on the state of the volcano and the weather and must be confirmed before it is committed to the programme. Bring rain gear, a warm layer and a towel for the hot springs.

How we arrange it

We coordinate transfers from Temuco airport, excursions and hot springs with local guides and operators. Departures depend on the weather and, in the case of the volcano, on its state, so we leave alternatives and a margin in the programme. Transfers to parks, lakes and hot springs are by road.

Booking & policies

Are the prices shown net or retail?

Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see a reference “from” price, indicative and subject to availability; the net rate is never shown outside the B2B Portal.

What happens after I book?

When you book, we receive your booking and start working on it: it shows as “In process” and we let you know of every update. Vouchers are sent once payments have been received.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations are governed by the conditions stated in each quotation. The standard conditions are: more than 30 days before arrival, the deposit is non-refundable; 30 to 15 days before arrival, 50% of the total price is charged; less than 15 days before arrival or a no-show, 100%. They may vary on peak dates and depend on the policy of each hotel and service. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. Conditions stated in the quotation and accepted by the agency at booking take precedence over the general schedule in Clause 7.1 of the Terms.

Can dates or passenger names be changed after booking?

Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
