Puerto Montt travel guide

Puerto Montt is the regional capital of Los Lagos and southern Chile's main logistics hub, where the airport, the cruise port and the routes to Chiloe, the Carretera Austral and the Lake District all converge. Its Angelmo market, with fresh shellfish and crafts, captures the city's maritime character. It makes a natural staging point when opening a programme through the south.

Who to offer it to

Nature and wildlifeIt is the base for the Vicente Pérez Rosales park and for the Chiloé outings.
FamiliesThe Angelmó market and the waterfront fill half a day with no long transfer.
SeniorsEverything essential is seen on vehicle excursions, with no physical demand.

When to go

The best window runs from October to April, with long days and clearer volcano views; January and February are the warmest and busiest. The southern climate is rainy and changeable for much of the year.

How many days

One or two days are enough for the city and its immediate surroundings. Puerto Montt works mainly as a base or connecting point towards Chiloe, Puerto Varas or the Carretera Austral.

What not to miss

The Angelmo market and fishing cove with its seafood stalls; the coastal walk over the Reloncavi Sound; and a ferry excursion to the nearby Chiloe archipelago. It is also an embarkation point for cruises and Patagonian navigations.

What to offer and why

Two nights as the region's gateway, with the programme's nights better spent in Puerto Varas. If the client arrives by cruise or flies early, the city covers the first and last day.

When to book

Four to six weeks; a little more in January and February, when it coincides with the cruise season.

Practical and operational

The real decision is Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt: the first has the lake and the hotels, the second the airport and the port. Chiloé depends on the ferry, which is why it is a full day and never a half.

How we arrange it

We coordinate airport-hotel transfers, the Chiloe excursion and the connection to Puerto Varas through selected local suppliers. Chiloe ferry seats are best confirmed in advance during high season.

Booking & policies

Are the prices shown net or retail?

Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the agency portal.

How is a booking confirmed?

Most bookings are confirmed immediately and the voucher is emailed within minutes. When a service shows “In process”, RUMBO LIBRE is confirming final availability with the receptive operator at destination — usually within 24 to 48 business hours.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those confirmed in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a supplier applies its own policy.

Can dates or passenger names be changed after confirmation?

Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed with the receptive operator subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
