Puerto Varas travel guide
Puerto Varas looks out over Lake Llanquihue with the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes behind it, and is the best base for exploring the Chilean Lake District. Its German settler heritage shows in the timber architecture and local baking. It packs lakes, volcanoes and waterfalls into a few kilometres, making it very efficient within a southern programme.

- The Petrohué falls and Todos los Santos lake approx. 9 h A full day with the Osorno volcano behind, if the day is clear.
- Frutillar and the German settlement towns approx. 5 h A half-day; architecture, the lakeside theatre and pastry with a migration history.
- The Andean crossing to Bariloche approx. 10 h Not an excursion: it is the transfer to Argentina, on a fixed schedule and one direction per day.
- Kayak on Lake Llanquihue approx. 3 h Flat water with the Osorno volcano in front; mornings are the calm ones.
- The Osorno volcano by road and chairlift approx. 5 h Up the flank to the snow line; the lift runs all year on seasonal hours, and nothing public goes up.
- Cochamó and the Reloncaví estuary approx. 9 h The road south along the fjord; a full day with very few other travellers.

When to go
From October to April you enjoy gardens in bloom and clear volcano views; January and February are the warmest and busiest. The rest of the year is rainier, with green landscapes and fewer visitors.
How many days
Two or three days let you combine the Osorno volcano, the Petrohue falls and Todos los Santos lake at an unhurried pace. It is also a good departure point for Bariloche via the Andean Crossing.
What not to miss
The Osorno volcano and its viewpoint; the Petrohue falls rushing over volcanic rock; the emerald waters of Todos los Santos lake; and the neighbouring town of Frutillar on the lakeshore. The Puerto Varas waterfront offers the classic postcard of lake and volcano.
What to offer and why
Three nights with Petrohué on day one and Frutillar or Chiloé on day two. The Andean crossing is sold as the transfer it is — a full day ending in another country — rather than as one more excursion.
When to book
Four to six weeks. For January and February, three to four months, because it competes with Chilean and Argentine domestic demand.
Practical and operational
The Andean crossing runs on a schedule and in one direction per day: the itinerary is built around it, not the other way round. In winter the rain governs anything that depends on seeing the volcano.

Are the prices shown net or retail?
Rates are net (wholesale) and reserved for travel agencies and tour operators, who sign in to see them and add their own margin. Public visitors see an indicative retail “from” price; the net rate is never shown outside the agency portal.
How is a booking confirmed?
Most bookings are confirmed immediately and the voucher is emailed within minutes. When a service shows “In process”, RUMBO LIBRE is confirming final availability with the receptive operator at destination — usually within 24 to 48 business hours.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations follow Clause 7 of the Terms: more than 30 days before the service, no penalty and a full refund; 15 to 30 days, 25%; 8 to 14 days, 50%; 3 to 7 days, 75%; less than 72 hours before commencement or a no-show, 100%. Certain destinations — Patagonia, the Amazon region and high-demand dates in peak season — apply stricter terms, stated in the quotation. The schedule above is indicative: the conditions that apply to each booking are those confirmed in the quotation, and may be stricter in high season, on public holidays or where a supplier applies its own policy.
Can dates or passenger names be changed after confirmation?
Amendment requests must reach RUMBO LIBRE at least 72 business hours before the service begins. Changes are managed with the receptive operator subject to availability, and any resulting rate difference applies. For private services, a name change may require re-issuing the booking at the current rate.
