EL CALAFATE - ARGENTINA
El Calafate lies on the shore of Lago Argentino, in Santa Cruz province, and serves as the access base for Los Glaciares National Park. Its main draw is the Perito Moreno glacier, around 80 km away, with boardwalks facing the ice front plus lake cruises and mini-trekking excursions.
The town centre, along Avenida del Libertador, concentrates most of the lodging, dining and agencies, with three- and four-star town hotels and lake views. Along the shore and on higher ground there are panoramic-profile hotels; isolated lodges also sit between town and the glacier, with their own transfer.
The workable season runs October to April; summer (December to February) brings the most stable weather. The transfer to Perito Moreno takes about 1.5 hours and pickups tend to be early. Plan a minimum of two nights.
