SALVADOR DA BAHIA - BRASIL
Salvador da Bahia holds Brazil's Portuguese colonial heritage and Afro-Brazilian culture. The core of the visit is the Pelourinho, in the Cidade Alta, with its cluster of churches and mansions; the Elevador Lacerda, the Mercado Modelo, Bahian cuisine, capoeira and the Atlantic beaches complete the picture. The city also serves as a base for the surrounding coast.
For accommodation, Barra is the most balanced choice, seafront and with good security along the coastal promenade. Rio Vermelho brings a dining and nightlife scene. The Pelourinho suits daytime cultural programmes, with nights preferably spent in quieter areas.
Salvador airport (SSA) connects to Brazil's main cities. Two nights cover the historic centre and surroundings. High season falls in the southern summer and over Carnaval, with strong demand. Moving between districts requires a vehicle.
