Balcones de Calafate — 4x4 off-road traverse
A 4x4 off-road traverse to the Balcones de Calafate on Cerro Huyliche, with guide. A route through the steppe with viewpoints over Lago Argentino.
The traverse leaves the tarmac a short distance from El Calafate and climbs the slope of Cerro Huyliche in a 4x4 vehicle. As the road gains height, the steppe opens up and the first viewpoints appear: the town below, the central body of Lago Argentino in turquoise tones and the Boca del Diablo, the lake's narrowest point.
Near 1,050 metres, the view reaches the cordillera and the ice accumulation zone; on clear days the outlines of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre stand out. Along the way the route crosses the Laberinto de Piedras, a formation some 85 million years old that was once a riverbed. Accompanied by a guide, the group stops at each balcony to take in the landscape.
