Isla Martillo — Walk Among Penguins
Shared excursion of about 6 hours to Isla Martillo, with a guide, combining a transfer to Estancia Harberton, a zodiac crossing and a one-hour guided walk among Magellanic penguins.
The transfer leaves Ushuaia along scenic routes 3 and J, crossing forest and peat bogs to Estancia Harberton, on the shore of the Beagle Channel. From the bay, a zodiac crosses in about 15 minutes to Isla Martillo, the only penguin colony in Tierra del Fuego.
On the island there is a one-hour walk along marked paths, among Magellanic penguins nesting in the sand and, in smaller numbers, Gentoo penguins. Distance from the animals is kept according to the reserve's guidelines, and a guide explains the breeding cycle and the behaviour of the colonies before the return to Harberton and Ushuaia.
Operational notes
Seasonal operation October to April. The walk on Isla Martillo is subject to quota and to Beagle Channel conditions; the crossing may be cancelled due to weather. Groups of more than 3 passengers: SUV or Minivan. Guide included. Available languages to be arranged at the time of booking.
