Punta Tombo — Magellanic penguin colony

Private full-day tour to the Punta Tombo reserve from Puerto Madryn, with guide, to view the mainland Magellanic penguin colony. Season runs September to April.

The route leaves Puerto Madryn and heads south across the Patagonian steppe, where guanacos, rheas and maras appear along the way. After about three hours of travel it reaches Punta Tombo, a coastal strip where thousands of Magellanic penguins move between their nesting burrows, the trails and the sea.

The walk follows marked boardwalks and paths of between 1.5 and 2 km, passing alongside the burrows and descending towards the beach. The penguins move freely and cross the trails, so they can be observed at close range. A guide accompanies the walk and explains the colony's breeding cycle.
