Seven-Colour Mountain (Vinicunca)
Private full-day tour from Cusco to the Seven-Colour Mountain (Vinicunca), with guide. High-altitude hike of about 3 hours to the viewpoint at 5,000 m.
Departure is before dawn, while it is still dark in Cusco. The transfer of about three hours crosses the high plateau towards the south-east, gaining altitude steadily to the trailhead, above 4,600 metres. From there the hike runs about three kilometres along an open valley among herds of alpacas, with the air already thin from the altitude.
The final stretch climbs to the viewpoint, at around 5,000 metres, facing the ridge striped with mineral oxides that gives Vinicunca its name and, beyond it, the Ausangate glacier. Cold and thin air set the pace: progress is slow, with pauses. Travelling privately, the stops and the pace follow the group, which matters when altitude shapes every metre of the climb. The return runs back along the same valley and road, arriving in Cusco in the late afternoon.
