Maras, Moray and Salineras

Private tour through the Sacred Valley to Moray and the Maras salt pans, with guide. Covers the circular terraces of Moray and the Maras salt ponds.

The route leads first to Moray, where several sets of circular terraces step down in rings towards the centre of the depression. There are several degrees of temperature difference between the upper rim and the floor, which turned these terraces into an Inca agricultural test field at around 3,500 metres altitude.

From there, a short drive descends to the Maras salt pans: more than three thousand stepped ponds on the slope of a narrow valley, fed by a saltwater spring that runs through channels and evaporates pan by pan. Local families still harvest the salt by hand, as they have since Inca times. Travelling privately, the time at each stop follows the group.
