Lake Sandoval — Tambopata National Reserve
Paddle-canoe excursion on Lake Sandoval, inside the Tambopata National Reserve, with guide. Combines river travel, a flooded-forest hike and wildlife watching from canoe.
The day starts with a boat ride along the Madre de Dios river to the entrance of the Tambopata National Reserve. From there, a trail of about 3 km crosses flooded forest dotted with aguaje palms, reaching the shore of Lake Sandoval.
On the lake, a paddle canoe moves quietly across the water, allowing a close approach to the wildlife: the family of giant river otters that lives in the lagoon, caimans resting among the roots, herons, kingfishers and turtles on the logs. At dusk, flocks of parrots and macaws cross the sky on their way back to their roosts.
