Géiseres del Tatio at sunrise
Private early-morning excursion to the Géiseres del Tatio, a geothermal field above 4,200 m, with guide. Watching the fumaroles at sunrise.
Departure is before dawn, still in the dark, climbing from the 2,450 metres of San Pedro de Atacama to the more than 4,200 metres of the Tatio geothermal field. At that hour the cold is intense and the steam columns rise straight up in the still air.
With the first light, the sun backlights dozens of fumaroles and steaming pools spread across the altiplano. On the way down, the route passes through the hamlet of Machuca, among high-altitude wetlands and herds of llamas.
