Cairu and Valença: mangroves and churches with guide
Boat departure from Morro de São Paulo to the towns of Cairu and Valença, sailing through the Rio do Inferno mangroves with a visit to the colonial churches, with guide. A cultural route through the archipelago.
The boat leaves the pier and enters the Rio do Inferno, a calm arm of water bordered by mangroves on both banks, where the skipper steers among sandbanks. The route leads to Cairu, one of the oldest villages on the Bahian coast, where the guide leads the visit to the Convento e Igreja de Santo Antônio, raised by the Franciscans in 1654, and the climb up to the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário.
The day continues to Valença, on the Rio Una, a town of traditional saveiro boatyards, before returning along the same mangrove course to Morro de São Paulo.
Operational notes
Sailing through the Rio do Inferno mangroves depends on the tide and on the presence of sandbanks. Guide included; languages available to be arranged at the time of booking. Morro de São Paulo is a car-free island: hotel pick-up is made on foot to the pier.
