The route heads north to Igarassu, where the Igreja de São Cosme e Damião, in use since 1535, preserves the layout of the area's first Portuguese settlement. The guide places each building within the history of colonisation.

A bridge connects to Itamaracá Island. There Forte Orange, built in stone in 1654 facing the channel, opens views over the sea and the mangrove; nearby lie the ruins of Vila Velha, the island's first settlement. The day combines colonial heritage and coast before the return to Recife.
