South of the Island — Pântano do Sul and Armação

The south of the island keeps the rhythm of the fishing villages. At Armação, the fishermen's boats rest on the sand beside the starting point of the trails toward Matadeiro beach. The water is usually calm and the settlement keeps the layout of the old colony.

Pântano do Sul closes the southern strip with three kilometres of sand and a community that still lives from artisanal fishing. Facing the sea, the restaurants serve the catch of the day and the Azorean-rooted cuisine. The guide accompanies the stops with the context of each village.
